GLP-1 side effects: what's normal and what's not

20267 min · Safety

GLP-1 medications have a strong safety record in large trials, but side effects are common, especially when doses increase. Knowing what is expected versus urgent protects you and reduces unnecessary anxiety.

Very common (often improve with time)

  • Nausea, reflux, or bloating
  • Constipation or loose stools
  • Reduced appetite and early fullness
  • Fatigue in the first weeks for some patients
  • Mild injection-site redness or itching

Less common — contact your provider

  • Vomiting that prevents fluids for more than 24 hours
  • Persistent abdominal pain not explained by mild GI upset
  • Signs of dehydration (dizziness, dark urine, rapid heart rate)
  • New gallbladder symptoms (severe right-upper pain after fatty meals)

Seek urgent care

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, allergic reaction (swelling, trouble breathing), vision changes, or symptoms suggestive of pancreatitis require prompt medical attention — do not wait for a routine message reply.

Practical tips patients use

  • Eat slowly; stop at comfortable fullness
  • Prioritize protein and fiber; avoid large high-fat meals early in titration
  • Stay hydrated; consider fiber or stool softeners only as directed
  • Keep a simple log of dose date, symptoms, and weight for your provider

Long-term monitoring

Your program should include periodic check-ins for weight, blood pressure, and relevant labs based on your history. GLP-1 therapy is medical treatment — not a supplement you manage alone.
